VODKA: is a drink which originated in Eastern Europe, the name stemming from the Russian word 'voda' meaning water.
The first documented production of vodka in Russia was at the end of the 9th century, but the first known distillery at, Khylnovsk, was about two hundred years later in 1174.
Although vodka began as rye-based liquor, as it became more popular to the masses, the potato became the ingredient of choice. The potato was much more common, and much easier to distill from than other grains. As vodka made the switch from a family made liquor to one that was produced on a grand scale by large distilleries, the potato was discarded and grain was embraced. Today most brands of vodka are distilled from rye, wheat, barley, and most commonly corn. Vodka is distilled at very high proofs and then filtered through vegetable charcoal.

Whole raspberries and blackberries are steeped in French spirits for a period of several weeks to achieve a rich fruit infusion. COINTREAU: is a brand of triple sec liqueur, and is produced in Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, a suburb of Angers, France. Cointreau sources its bitter oranges from all over the world, usually Spain, Brazil and Saint-Raphaël, Haiti. The Cointreau Distillery was set up in 1849 by Adolphe Cointreau, a confectioner, and his brother Edouard-Jean Cointreau from Angers. Their first success was with the cherry liqueur, guignolet, but it was when they concocted a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels and pure alcohol from sugar beets that the success of the enterprise was definitively confirmed.[1] In 1875, the first bottles of Cointreau were sold. It is now estimated that thirteen million bottles are sold each year, in more than 150 countries.

CACHACA: Though the exact date of the introduction of cachaça is unknown, it was produced shortly after sugarcane was introduced to Brazil, probably before 1550. Histories vary, but it is likely that cachaça was invented after sugar mill workers noticed that, when sugarcane juice was left out in the sun it would ferment and turn into alcohol. Once the juice was distilled, cachaça was born. Cachaça is a cousin to rum, which is distilled from molasses, a by-product of the sugar refining process.

RUM: is made by distilling fermented sugar and water. This sugar comes from the sugar cane and is fermented from cane juice, concentrated cane juice, or molasses. Molasses is the sweet, sticky residue that remains after sugar cane juice is boiled and the crystallized sugar is extracted. Most Rum is made from molasses. Molasses is over 50% sugar, but it also contains significant amounts of minerals and other trace elements, which can contribute to the final flavour. Rums made from cane juice, primarily on Haiti and Martinique, have a naturally smooth palate.
White Rums are generally light-bodied, Golden Rums, also known as Amber Rums, are generally medium-bodied. Most have spent several years aging in oak casks, which give them smooth, mellow palates. Dark Rums are traditionally full-bodied, rich, caramel-dominated Rums. Spiced Rums can be white, golden, or dark Rums. They are infused with spices or fruit flavours. The Caribbean is the epicentre of world Rum production. Virtually every major island group produces its own distinct Rum style; the oldest can be traced to Barbados in the mid 1600’s.

(There's much debate as to when exactly the Mojito was invented and by whom. Many claim it was crafted in Cuba in the late 1800s. Others elaborate on this theory saying that the Mojito was the preferred beverage of Sir Francis Drake as early as the 1500s. According to The Mojito Company's website, it was English pirate Richard Drake who prepared the first version of the drink using aguardiente (in Spanish that means fire water- the HARD liquor of choice in Colombia), an unrefined kind of rum that he mixed with some sugar, lime and mint. Originally named "El Draque" (or the Dragon after his boss Sir Francis), story has it the swashbucklers introduced the drink to Cuba on their treasure-hunting exploits through the Caribbean and Latin America. Ernest Hemingway’s drink of choice when he lived and wrote in Havana was the Mojito.)

WHISKY: The word “whisky” was derived from “Uisge Beatha” which is Gaelic for ‘water of life’. The knowledge of distilling was discovered somewhere in Asia around 800 BC. Initially the technique was only used to make perfume, but there is evidence that the Chinese also distilled liquor from rice at this time. It is unclear exactly how the knowledge of distillation found its way to the British Isles, but we know that the craft was brought to Europe by the Moors. What most likely happened then was that the knowledge spread through Europe’s monasteries. A common theory is that it was St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, who brought the art with him when he came to Ireland as a Christian Missionary in 432AD. Whisky back in early days tasted very different from the drink we enjoy today. At that time whisky was consumed very young and had a brutal, raw taste. The discovery that whisky improves and mellows if it is allowed to mature was not made until the mid eighteenth century. As with many other breakthroughs the discovery was made by accident; an old forgotten cask was found, and the lucky owner realised that the whisky had in fact not been destroyed but instead tasted better than ever. The world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery is the Old Bushmills Distillery, situated in Northern Ireland, founded in 1608
SCOTCH WHISKY:. Scotland has internationally protected the term "Scotch". For a whisky to be labelled Scotch it has to be produced in Scotland. If it is to be called Scotch, it cannot be produced in England, Wales, Ireland, America, Japan or anywhere else. They are most often referred to as "whiskey". 1494 appears to be the earliest documented record of distilling in Scotland. Legend would have it that St Patrick introduced distilling to Ireland in the fifth century AD and that the secrets travelled with the Dalriadic Scots when they arrived in Kintyre around AD500. In Scottish Whisky making, peat, a natural fuel cut from the moors of Scotland, is used to fire the kilns. Smoke from the fire drifts upwards through a wire mesh floor to dry out the barley. It is the distinctive smell of the smoke that contributes to the character of the spirit.
Some Differences between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky.
Not all barley used in Irish whisky is malted. Together with the fact that Irish malt generally is dried without the use of peat or any other smoke, Irish whiskey allows more of the natural flavours of the barley to rise to the front than Scotch whisky. Because it is triple distilled, Irish whiskey also has a softer, more rounded flavour than its Scottish counterpart. The Irish pot stills are larger than Scottish stills. The Irish tend to put more emphasis on the process and the casks than Scottish distillers who emphasise the skills of the master blender.
BOURBON: Bourbon is a type of American whiskey – a distilled spirit made primarily from corn (maize). The name of the spirit derives from its historical association with an area known as Old Bourbon, around what is now Bourbon County, Kentucky . It has been produced since the 18th century. While it may be made anywhere in the United States it is strongly associated with Kentucky.

FRANGELICO: Produced in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, its origins date back more than 300 years to the presence of early Christian monks living in the hills of the area. Their skills in fine food and drink would have included the art of distilling, especially the use of the wild hazelnuts and other local ingredients to create a liqueur on which Frangelico is based today. Its name is also part of the same local legend - an abbreviation of Fra. Angelico, a hermit monk believed to have inhabited the magnificent Piedmont hills during the 17th century. The hazelnuts used in Frangelico are unique; they even have their own name - Tonda Gentile - and are a speciality of the northern Italian region of Piedmont . Tonda Gentile hazelnuts are known for being bigger, plumper and more uniform, with a skin that sheds easily, allowing for toasting without a bitter taste. Their sweet flavour is the reason they are so sought after by internationally known confectionery brands, Ferrero Rocher and Nutella, as well as by Frangelico. The Jacobite Rebellion changed the course of history, and though it ultimately failed, its legacy - and Charlie’s name - lives on. So too does his drink. GREEN CHARTREUSE: is the only liqueur in the world with a completely natural green colour. Apparently only two Chartreuse monks know the identity of the 130 plants, how to blend them and how to distil them into this world famous liqueur. They are also the only ones who know which plants they have to macerate to produce the natural green and yellow colours. And they alone supervise the slow ageing in oak casks. Green Chartreuse is 55% alcohol; it was first introduced in 1605.
